Content Management System
A CMS is a tool that enables a variety of (centralised) technical and (de-centralised) non technical staff to create, edit, manage and finally publish (in a number of formats) a variety of content (such as text, graphics, video, documents etc), at the same time as being controlled by a centralised set of rules, process and workflows that ensure logical, validate electronic content.

Why are there so many types of Content Management System?
If every piece of information that is stored digitally within an organisation can be describe as content - then a piece of software such as an 'asset management tool' can be said to be a content management system in the same way that a 'document management system' that manages documents can be said to be a content management system or a web content management system that manages web pages can also be a CMS. Every vendor sees the management of content from their product viewpoint. Combine this with the reality that at the so-called 'Enterprise Content Management' level, solutions have not just one form of content management but many - so they may be looking after content in the form of digital assets, documents, web content management, records and much more.

content management systemIf you then add into this equation those vendors that have found ways of stretch the type of digital information that their product manages to include other content types - however badly they actually do it then you would be forgiven if you found yourself in a state of 'content management confusion'. Not only do content management systems help website users with content editing, they also take care of a lot of "behind the scenes" work such as:

• Automatically generate navigation elements
• Making content searchable and index able
• Keeping track of users, their permissions and security settings
• And much, much more.

When you have a CMS, you suddenly have a wonderful advantage in the time it takes to react to market intelligence. You can write, edit and publish updates in a matter of minutes without suffering from "Webmaster Bottleneck". If your product globally propagate a virus, updates at this pace could be essential.
By automating the building of pages on your website, you will cut extensive sums from the site's maintenance costs. A reasonably content rich site could need 250 or more updates a day, each averaging around 2 man-hours to produce and test.
